Kyaru Pamyu Pamyu is well know for her crazy Harajuku style costumes and quirky music videos.
(If you haven’t heard or seen any of her videos check out some of them through the post). This is her first video and still the most famous.
When I discovered that her costumes would be on display in Tokyo at Lake town Kaze shopping Centre I was really excited. I like her music as it’s always happy and fun. As you’ll see, the costumes are often colourful and eccentric.
The display is called Sweet Costumes in the Candy Forest and is up for a limited time 25th July – 17th August 2014, it costs 800 yen and will then be moved to different locations over the summer
At the entrance we saw this big fluffy guy. The videos and live shows often feature a lot of other strange characters.
When you pay at the entrance you receive plastic candy. Ben shows below how you use the candy.
1. Don’t eat it Ben 2. Place the candy in the bunny’s, mouth 3. Don’t fight with the bunny
The point of the lollipop is that it activates a few special ‘areas’ where the lighting is different or the costume is designed to move.
For example, in one case, there are mirrors surrounding the dress, and you can peek through the windows. Giving Pamyurin (the bunny) the sweet turns on the lights inside.
There are also a couple of boxes where you can put your face through a hole and take a photo of yourself ‘wearing’ one of the costumes. Obviously Ben loved this as he’s always sticking his head through strange holes…
Although the space was small, the exhibition was really well laid out. There were tonnes of costumes to see and the lighting and decoration had been thought about too.
Below are a few pictures and the videos they came from. We’ll add a gallery on Flickr too if you want to see some more detailed shots:
These came from the song ‘Candy Candy’
This is from ‘Fashion Monster’
This one is ‘Ninja Re Bang Bang’
And this is ‘Furisodation’
The skirt was made out of sweet packets.
The boots for a lot of these outfits are Dr. Martens.
The screen behind this display had live shows and videos playing.
